In the Spring of 1979 some members of Commonword worked with a few of Manchester's homes for battered women. The poetry, transcribed interviews, diary entries, and illustrations that came from that time are contained in Clout! The Story Behind the Bruises. While each of the contributions in this collection varies in form and style, they collectively address the complex dynamics of domestic violence, including the economic, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological effects on individual women and their children. Topics include the logistical and emotional difficulties of leaving an abusive home, navigating the legal system, and hope for a new life. The text acknowledges that while domestic violence is an issue across class lines, working class women's positionality makes them uniquely vulnerable.
